As a creator, you utilize artistic elements and key points to help create beautiful and effective designs. This series can make you more aware of what those design guidelines are and how you can employ them to make your designs better still!
Coloring Web page and the principles of design
Coloring Site is one of the most original varieties of artistic expression. Going in the past to the prehistoric times with the Lascaux Caves (some of the first registered human Coloring Web page), Coloring Web page is practiced in all cultures worldwide and has been for more than 100 years. To keep it simple, we’ll show off 19th and 20th century expressions showing how you can put the elements and principles of design to work.
The concepts of design are:
- Proportion and scale
- Repetition and pattern
- Unity and harmony
Balance is one of the most intuative and complicated design theory. It’s the way the artist creates a sense of equilibrium in a design, by how the objects in the design are arranged. You will discover three major types of balance:
- Symmetrical/Formal Balance is when elements sit in such a way that two halves of the look (whether vertical or horizontal) are mirrors of one another – both edges have the same weight. Its created around a central range that bisects the look into two different halves.
- Asymmetrical/Informal Balance is when elements sit so that there is an uneven distribution of weight
- Radial Balance is when elements are positioned evenly around a central point
Proportion and Scale
The juxtaposition of components of different sizes, or proportions, in a work of art helps create a sense of scale. Level can be utilized for multiple effects – whether to show a sense of space and depth or to help generate a dominant center point.
An enormous part of fabricating depth within an image, and desire for a piece, is to apply multiple contrasting elements – or varying elements set hand and hand. This is done with color, form, size or feel.

Repetition and pattern
The usage of the same or an identical element repeated over and over can give a work a feeling of activity or framework. Where an element is similar enough and repeated often enough, it can create a style.
Unity and harmony
The mixture of similar elements creates an visually pleasing overall result. While tons of design elements are different, a dominating unity created by similarities in color, pattern, feel or other elements makes the painting or design feel harmonious.
Translating to graphic design
Custom Bearbrick implements all of these key points in his web site design for Bright Austin Interiors.
Bearbrick uses proportion and scale to generate asymmetrical balance. Components of different size and form sit on a page not to mirror one another but to balance each other out. He creates comparison in the juxtaposition of brightly colored elements against a white record.
Repetition is utilized in the setting of the circles. This causes the viewer’s eyeball to move between elements to be able to impart the information the client would like the viewers to see. At exactly the same time, pattern can be used as a simple depth in this group designs (in the flower style of the “about us” button as well as the repeated lines circling other round elements) to be able to produce interest – so the design can be simple without being boring.
And while different elements of the page find the user’s eyesight at different times, the feminine style of the elements and the use of color make the website appear altogether harmonious. The design has activity, depth, interest and brings the user’s eyes to the most crucial information on the webpage – from the great example of a successful design.
